15. Toy Manchester Terrier

Weighing less than twelve pounds, this is a true Toy version of the Standard Manchester Terrier. The Manchester Terrier originated in Britain when dog fancier John Hulme crossed a Whippet bitch with a noted rat-killing dog.

These energetic small dogs will still go to ground (chase quarry in underground burrows), which means they’ll enjoy participating in Earthdog tests. They’re also good at Obedience, Tracking, and Flyball.

Adventuresome little companions, they’ll have no qualms about exploring on their own if not kept carefully supervised.

They’re good with senior citizens and enjoy carrying on a “conversation.”

13. Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-its-queen-tlee), familiarly called the Xolo (show-low), is an ancient hairless breed who has his roots firmly planted in Mexico, although one theory is that they first appeared in Ecuador.

The name comes from the Aztec god Xolot, and itzuintli, which is the Aztec word for dog.

These are intelligent, lively dogs. Moviegoers will remember seeing Xolos in the biographical movie of the life of Frieda Kahlo.

The breed comes in three sizes, including the Toy.

There are also two varieties: hairless and coated. Average life span is 12 to 14 years, and they can be up to thirteen inches at the withers.

12. Cairn Terrier

Named after the rock piles (cairns) in which they hunted vermin in their native Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, Cairn Terriers are active little dogs.

Two other breeds were also developed from the same original ancestors: The West Highland White Terrier and the Scottish Terrier.

This lively, tenacious little dog is probably most like the original ancestors, who were true working Terriers.

Intelligent and playful into their teens, these little dogs live an average of 13 to 14 years. Males weigh about fourteen pounds and stand about ten inches at the withers; females average thirteen pounds and are approximately nine and a half inches at the withers.

The Chinese Crested comes in two varieties: The Hairless, with tufts of hair only on his head, tail, and lower legs; and the Powderpuff, who is completely covered with long, silky hair.

Chinese Cresteds are generally healthy little dogs, living 15 or more years.

The Hairless are often missing teeth and nails (factors related to the hairless gene), while the Powderpuffs have full dentition.

10. English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Spaniel, known in Britain as the King Charles Spaniel, is one of the oldest breeds. English Toy Spaniels are affectionate, intelligent dogs weighing between nine and twelve pounds.

Their life span is 10 to 12 years. A born and bred lapdog, happy to sit rather than romp, the English Toy Spaniel enjoys the company of other pets.

They’re cautious with strangers. Bright and willing to please, these dogs have still retained some of their hunting instincts.

English Toy Spaniels are somewhat independent, so obedience training will take a bit of time.

Pomeranians look like descendants of the large Northern breeds, as if they might be bred down from the sled dogs of Iceland or Lapland. But some examples of ancient Mediterranean earthenware vessels and mosaics depict small dogs with a strong resemblance to more modern Poms, so this may not be true.

The name comes from Pomerania, an area of northern Germany near modern Poland.
